Some may look at Soldier of Fortune and wonder why the heck they would want to play a first-person shooter from 2000! Well to be fair, this is a fun shooter that did spawn a couple of sequels back in the day. It is probably most well-remembered for the controversy over how brutal the game was in terms of its gore and violence, it literally had an engine that was built around blowing off limbs!
Who Needs McClane When You Have Mullins?
The story of the game is pretty badass. The main character is a dude called John Mullins and he along with his bro, Hawk are a two-man army that are called in when the poop hits the fan and things need fixing. The game has a pretty decent story that sees some nukes go missing and Mullins and Hawk needing to go all over the world to make sure they do not end up in the wrong hands.
I thought the two main characters in Soldier of Fortune were pretty damn cool and while you can see the twist coming a mile away. I felt that it was still pretty effective when it went down.
Running And Killing
The gameplay on offer here is very shallow, but it is also a great deal of fun. Missions are split into levels and most of the time you have an objective, but just getting to the end of each mission is really what it is all about. Soldier of Fortune has many different weapons for you to use, but my personal favorite is the sniper rifle.
The reason for this is that you can hit an enemy in a certain spot and they will behave accordingly. You can blow off an arm and watch it fall, you can shoot a dude in the head and watch the brains splatter. Back in 2000, this was pretty shocking stuff and it is still pretty effective to this day. While it is not the kind of game you would play through over and over again, the campaign is fun and it is short enough so that you do not get bored. It does have a few multiplayer modes as well, but I am not sure how it will go if you try and get a game going these days.
No One Ever Said War Was Pretty
I have said a few times now that Soldier of Fortune was released in 2000. Well, it looks like a game that was released in 2000. At the time, people liked the visuals, and though the whole “dismemberment” thing was very impressive. These days, it is not exactly the most appealing looking game. The levels are quite varied, but they lack finer details that make you feel like you are in a real living and breathing world. It gets the job done, but I have a feeling some people might look at the dated visuals and not be able to get past them.
I know that when you go back and play some older first-person shooters, they can often not hold up very well. I would not say that Soldier of Fortune is an amazing game, but it does hold up better than some other FPS games I have played from this era. I do want to point out that if you are playing this game you have to play it on PC. The Dreamcast version is not “bad” but playing this with the Dreamcast controller is not a fun time!

- It can be a fun time playing through it
- The way you can blow off limbs is brutal, but satisfying

- It is lacking the wow factor modern FPS games have

In contrast with the first game, Soldier of Fortune II has a more diverse number of real-life weapons. Several of the weapons can have special attachments such as a laser sight. In the single player campaign, it is also possible to have mixed akimbo weapons.
Unlike the original game, there are no futuristic weapons or sci-fi elements. The most advanced weapon encountered is the OICW, which is based on a former weapon prototype of the United States military.

- In Capture the Flag, all players are divided into two teams: a red team and a blue team. The objective is for one team to get the flag of the other team, located in the enemies base, and bring it back to their own base. Once a team hits the number of flags captured the team win the game or once the time limit is reached the team with the biggest number of flags captured win the game. Killed players will respawn after a few seconds.
- In Infiltration, all players are divided into two teams: a red team and a blue team. A suitcase is placed in a neutral location on the map. Both teams have different objectives: the blue team has to carry the suitcase to a rendezvous point, while the red team is to protect the suitcase at all costs, and to prevent the blue team from taking the suitcase to the rendezvous point. The round ends when either the blue team successfully brings the suitcase to the rendezvous point, the blue team eliminates every member of the red team, or if the red teams eliminates every member of the blue team. Unlike Team Deathmatch and Deathmatch, killed players do not respawn, staying dead until the end of the round.
- In Team Deathmatch, all players are divided into two teams: a red team and a blue team. The objective of Team Deathmatch is to be the first team to hit the frag limit, which can be achieved by killing opposing players, and by avoiding death from opposing players. Once a team hits the frag limit, they win the game and the round finishes. Depending on the admin/creator's choice, friendly fire may or may not be allowed.
